Travazzano is a small village located about 5 miles from the provincial capital of Teramo in Italy’s Abruzzo Region. Travazzano is also a “frazione” (suburb or surrounding village) of the Commune of Teramo.
The major part of Travazzano sits on a the fertile Tordino River plane. Overlooking this plan are a number of very old houses. One can see Valle San Giovanni and the Gran Sasso from the higher locations slightly to the north of Travazzano.
Located about 50 miles to the south is the Pescara Airport “Pasquale Lanzi.” To arrive in Travazzano you must take the road from Teramo that leads to Montorio al Vomano. About 4 miles down the road you will see the signs for Valle San Giovanni. Travazzano is about 1 km along this road.
Things to see in and places to visit around this small village include:
* Santa Maria di Ponte al Porto Travazzano Abruzzo Italy The medieval church, Santa Maria di Ponte a Porto, located on the left bank of the Tordino river. The name of the church likely dates back to a toll station that was located adjacent to the church on the Tordino River. Inscribed on the front door of the church is that year 1640. Don’t miss the 15th century fresco depicting the Madonna along with Saints Sebastian and Rocco. Chiesa di Santa Maria di Ponte a Porto, o “ad pontem”.
* The ruins of San Giovanni in Pergulis, located in nearby Valle San Giovanni.
* olivo Olive Oil being pressed in the late fall at the Oleificio Alto Tordino. If you are fortunate Sandro will take you to see one of his high performance racing cars.
* The workshop of the village idraulico (plumber), Gabriele Quieti.
* The local pond run by the Scorranese Family where you can go fishing.
* The acheological museum in Teramo, the fortress in Civitella del Tronto, the ceramics center of Castelli, the religious mecca of San Gabriele, the Gran Sasso (the highest peak in the Apennine Mountain Range), or the nearby beachtown of Giulianova. All within a short drive.
No stores are located in this village. You will need to hike up to Bar Novanta run by Francesca in Valle San Giovanni. For chow you will have to go to Teramo or to Fabiocchi, an agriturismo located in Frondarola located just 1 km to the east. A nearby rental goes by the name Casale ( Casale, Via del Casale, Sn, ? +1-301-571-8252. It is a small villa located in the central portion of Valle San Giovanni.
Plans are currently being developed with regards to constructing a bicycle route from Travazzano to the Colle dell’Asino. Once this is finished it will be possible to travel from Travazzano to Frondarola, Valle San Giovanni, Valle Soprana, and Faieto by means of bicycle.
